Example of improper use of the stepladder

Workplace safety is one of the most important factors to consider when starting a workday. In the professional market, there are sectors where the ladder is considered an essential tool in daily operations. For this reason, whether it’s a stepladder, a telescopic ladder, or a platform ladder, attention must be paid to certain measures before using it.

The stepladder, also known as a self-supporting ladder, is comfortable and enhances safety at work. Therefore, it is ideal for tasks related to carpentry, construction, or gardening. However, improper use of these ladders can result in serious workplace accidents.

In such cases, company safety departments play a crucial role in ensuring that workers adhere to all ladder safety regulations. Nevertheless, they are not always used correctly.

In the example shown in the image, the stepladder is being used improperly. According to the EN 131-3 standard, the worker should not be positioned on the top two rungs of this type of ladder. Additionally, other considerations when working with a stepladder include avoiding crossing from one side to the other over the top and not adopting a ‘straddle’ position due to the risk of falling.

EN 131-3 Standard

Part 3 of the EN 131 standard regulates user instructions and provides safety advice for ladder use, including stepladders. This standard, which has been in force since July 1, 2018, covers the following aspects:

  • Safety symbols in the form of pictograms that must be applied to the ladder.
  • Each ladder should be accompanied by a basic instruction manual that may include assembly steps, usage recommendations, and some tips on maintenance, storage, and preservation.

Recommendations for proper use of the stepladder

The stepladder is a structure with two or more self-supporting sections, allowing ascent from one or both sides. To prevent any damage when using the stepladder, it is advisable to follow a series of recommendations:

  • Check that the ladder is in perfect condition and that all parts are correctly positioned.
  • The ladder should be placed on a flat, horizontal, sturdy, and non-slip surface. Therefore, the incline of the ground where the stepladder is installed should not exceed 6º.
  • Always work facing the ladder, and ascend and descend from this position.
  • Avoid excessive lateral loads and do not extend beyond the ladder during the task.
  • The rungs and grips should be clean and free of any substances to prevent slipping.
